Why is there different bra sizing across the world?

by Beth Sables 31 Jul 2024 0 Comments

Different bra sizing systems around the world stem from various historical and regional developments in fashion and garment manufacturing. Here are some key reasons why bra sizing differs:

Measurement Systems: Different countries use different units of measurement (inches vs. centimetres). For example, the UK and the US use inches for band sizes, while many European countries use centimetres.

Cultural Variations: Cultural differences in body shape and size preferences influence bra designs and sizing. These variations cater to the typical body shapes found in different regions.

Brand Origins: Brands that originate in specific countries often follow the sizing conventions of their home market. As these brands expand globally, they may retain their original sizing systems.

Historical Development: The development of bra sizing systems evolved independently in various parts of the world. This led to different conventions and standards being established in each region.

Key Bra Sizing Systems

UK Sizing

Band sizes: 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, etc.

Cup sizes: AA, A, B, C, D, DD, E, F, FF, G, GG, H, HH, J, JJ, K, KK, L

US Sizing

Band sizes: Similar to UK, but cup sizes can differ slightly in labeling.

Cup sizes: AA, A, B, C, D, DD (or E), DDD (or F), G, H, I, J, K, etc.

European (EU) Sizing

Band sizes: Usually in centimeters (e.g., 70, 75, 80, 85, etc.).

Cup sizes: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, etc.

French (FR) and Spanish (ES) Sizing

Band sizes: Similar to European but often add 15 to the EU band size (e.g., EU 70 is FR 85).

Cup sizes: Similar to European.

Australian (AU) Sizing

Band sizes: Similar to UK but often use different labels for cups.

Cup sizes: A, B, C, D, DD, E, F, FF, G, GG, etc.

Conversion Challenges

Inconsistency: Even within the same sizing system, there can be inconsistencies between brands.

Sister Sizes: Understanding sister sizes (e.g., 34C in UK might fit similarly to 32D or 36B) can help navigate different systems.

Professional Fittings: Getting professionally fitted when trying a new brand or shopping in a different country can ensure a better fit.

Different bra sizing systems exist due to varying measurement units, cultural differences, historical developments, and brand origins. Understanding these differences and seeking professional fittings can help navigate the complexities of international bra sizing.
